Teaching

I am currently teaching voice lessons over Zoom and at the Chapel Hill School of Musical Arts (Contact CHSMA). For Zoom lesson rates, please contact me using the “Contact” module of this website. I look forward to working with you!

My Teaching Style and Philosophy

I have been teaching voice lessons since 2015, and I specialize in working with students ages 14 and up. In particular, I concentrate on airflow, breath control, and Italianate appoggio (or support) as well as releasing tension in the body while singing. To create a more holistic approach, I incorporate acting, diction, artistry, style, and expression into my teaching as well. I use a Western classical vocal technical approach and work with singers mostly on Western classical art music and musical theatre.

As I graduated Northwestern University with a minor in Music Theory, I can also tutor students in lower-level music theory courses as well as teach students of all ages how to read music.

Testimonials

When I began as a new student to vocal and opera performance, Naomi’s patience, teaching structure, and passion for both her craft and the success of her students was absolutely paramount to the great improvement I saw. I really respected her methods that preferentially focused on the fundamentals of singing and core support. Often times, quarter systems force you to have a performance ready in merely 10 weeks, and it can feel like the singular result is the end goal, rather than building a strong foundation for healthy singing. Due to her adaptability and vast experience with a diverse community, I would highly recommend Naomi and her approach to the vocal method to singers of all ages and skill levels.

Dr. Merer has all of the great qualities one would expect in an outstanding voice teacher: mastery, passion, humility, patience, and creativity. One of her most amazing qualities that stood out to me, however, is her empathy. In the incredibly personal pursuit of improving one’s voice, negative self-talk and harsh self-criticism can easily take over. Dr. Merer consistently reinforced positivity and worked with me to help me find my voice.

Naomi Merer is a fantastic teacher and mentor to her students. I have observed her as a colleague in masterclasses and am always impressed with the specific and meaningful guidance she provides that engenders near-instant results. She possesses a deep understanding of vocal technique and is skilled in musical and diction coaching. She excels in singing Mozart and bel canto repertoire and is adept in providing excellent direction in this regard. Finally, her special attention to reframing instruction around “treble” and “lower” voices provides an inclusive sensitivity to students and the spectrum of gender; this awareness and attention to correctness and inclusion is essential to contributing to voice education. I’ve taken a few lessons with Naomi and am always thrilled with the results she gets out of me.
