UCSB Doctor of Musical Arts Lecture Recital

Naomi will give a lecture on her research and culminating dissertation, Get thee to an asylum: reflecting on the evolution of mental illness and its portrayal in Thomas’ operatic mad scene, which discusses Ambroise Thomas’ 1868 Hamlet, and especially his characterization of Ophélie (his version of Shakespeare’s Ophelia) and her mad scene.

Additionally, Naomi will perform Ophélie’s Act 4 mad and suicide scenes as well as Jake Heggie’s Songs and Sonnets to Ophelia in collaboration with pianist Mandee Madrid Sikich.
